I'm a lifelong learner that creates spaces, builds experiences, and hopes to spread a love for curiosity everywhere I go.
I have always been interested in building spaces to be used, both spiritual and reflective experiences for those inside. I have worked to learn how to build structurally sound buildings in wood and metal. I also love to mix mediums together and experiment with various elements, which can be seen in my animations, metal work, and painting. My artwork is a manifestation of how I think and follows the process of how I learn. Anything around me, from my environment, to my friends, to something I read in a book or online influences and motivates my art. Read my full artist statement below. |
This is an animation I made during the end of my Sophmore year to the middle of my Junior year at Buxton School in Williamstown, Massachusetts. I feel it encapsulates a lot of who I am, my love for improvisation, exploration, and also serves as a nice tour of Buxton School and snapshot of my friends.
Artist Statement
My memories are split into shards that are sometimes hard to connect or keep track of, many of which have been broken to the point where I can’t reconnect them. This feeling of disconnected memories influences all of my work, and my creative process is a direct response to trying to understand that feeling. My work responds to this dissonance through a process that involves curiosity, and what I can best describe as a learning and relearning process sparked by random motivation. It’s an improvised conversation with myself in order to communicate inexpressible parts of who I am.
I work using found material, and, most frequently, wood and metal. I seek to create spaces that emanate with their own meaning and power, so that anyone that enters into the space and interacts with it, physically or mentally, can interpret it. I hope for all my work to have a practical use, whether that be a table or an installation that commands space and emotion enough to connect with viewers that interact with it. This process has drawn me to artisanry; aesthetically beautiful or interesting pieces that have practical uses.
The final driving aspect of my work is community. I struggle with individualism and cultural disconnects between Salvador and Boston. Growing up mostly in a culture I used to hate, and longing for the culture I fell in love with but am so distant from influences my daily actions, and therefore my art. I use creating as a tool to bring people together, and bring me closer to home. I don’t know if at my core I’m more motivated by the communal nature of Salvador’s culture or the individualistic nature of American culture, but I strive to exist in community with others. My work is a never-ending conversation between those contradictions. I love to learn, and I love to play. I strive towards creating welcoming spaces and art that others can play in together.
